Bracing for the Holidays with Braces

bracesAll I want for Christmas is…to get my braces off! Unfortunately, Santa’s not an orthodontist so he won’t be able to pull off that particular Christmas wish for you this year. There is some good news though – you CAN survive the holidays with braces!

Here are a few tips to keep you and your braces feeling festive this holiday season:

Splurge Wisely – Skip the super sticky sweets, like caramel and toffee. You can indulge in the softer, more braces-friendly treats, like cookies, cake, pie and ice cream. Just remember to brush and floss afterward!

Use Your Molars – It’s best to try to avoid hard foods like candy canes. That being said, we know the temptation can be hard – especially during the holiday season. If you decide to eat something hard, do not bite it with your front teeth – always use your molars. Your molars are bigger and stronger teeth that will be able to handle tougher work.

Break It Up – Break or cut your food into small pieces before eating. The smaller the piece, the easier it will be to chew up and the lesser the risk of breaking a bracket.

Increase Your Oral Hygiene Efforts – Normally you should brush twice a day and floss once a day, but drastic times call for drastic measures: Double-up on the oral hygiene efforts by brushing and flossing after indulging in sweets and rinse your mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash afterwards.

Need some help? You can get floss-threaders to help guide the floss between braces and under the wires to more easily floss your teeth. If you’re having trouble with food debris removal, an oral irrigator can be very helpful.

Travel Smart – Going to a party? Take your oral care tools with you! Travelsized antiseptic mouthwash is great to use after eating when you’re someplace where you’re unable to brush your teeth. Another “must have” when you’re out and about is a pack of the GUM® Proxabrush® Go-Betweens® Cleaners. These little brushes will fit easily in a purse or wallet and are a lifesaver when it comes to removing food debris from braces.

The bottom line here is that you CAN enjoy the holidays – complete with seasonal sweets and treats – as long as you put a little extra work into it. Be mindful when eating and give your mouth some extra TLC afterwards.
